You should also check into fail2ban - it is very effective for blocking brute force attempts.

Thanks for the offer! I'd like to wait some time, maybe 1-2 days, to see if there are any responses on what platform (Google Sites vs. old wiki vs. new media wiki) people would prefer. If there are none, or the new mediawiki "wins", it'd be really great if you could host it :)

Wow! That's a great way to get this started with minimal overhead. FYI: There are some interesting comments in the <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/PHP/comments/mt928/proposal_a_communitypowered_collection_of_php/" rel="nofollow">Reddit thread</a> as well.

I've created a google sites page for doing this. Will be up shortly. You only need to request write access to the wiki and it will be public.

I believe the policies of Wikipedia would make this really cumbersome, if allowed at all. We'd have to have external references from trusted sources for each statement. Media coverage is of course out of the question. This needs some research, but I don't feel good about the idea.

This strikes me as a very good idea. However, creating a new site for this does not. What are the arguments for not simply using Wikipedia for this -- starting a subject like, "Best Practices for PHP" and then managing it as it goes?
